My 5 minutes of Fame

The Baby Now

It was a very cold January morning and the phone rang my son was on the other end saying my daughter in law was in labor. My daughter in law's mother lived up the road from us so she was coming to pick me up . When Mary got there she was so nervous about her daughter being in labor she asked me to drive. I woke Neener up to go with us to babysit my grandson. We arrived at my son's home and they were ready to go, my daughter in law was having contractions but not close together we had plenty of time to get to the hospital.
Now let me explain, we lived in southeastern Kentucky where the roads are very curvy and there are hills and it takes f-o-r-e-v-e-r to get anywhere. Somewhere that may take you on a straight road 20 minutes will take you 45 here. Now on with the story , as we are traveling through the state park area which has tons of curves and hills (and no cell reception) my daughter in law starts heavy labor. I told Mary she had better call ahead to the hospital so they would know we were coming,oh yeah, no reception! Oh did I forget to mention that the hospital was 50 miles away, ummm yes! So my daughter in law really starts into labor we finally get out of the curves and as we get onto the Mountain Parkway her water broke (we still have at least 35 miles to hospital). I look at Mary and said we are going to deliver our own grandchild, wrong thing to say! Mary started to panic! Mary started yelling at her daughter"don't you have that baby here you wait!" My daughter in law is saying" Mommy I can't help when its gonna come!" We hit a dip in the road. My daughter in law yells I can feel the head! I was going 70, pulled the car over to the side of the road, jamming it into park, without hardly touching the brakes. Doors flew open, Mary is on the phone to the state police hollering at the top of her lungs"oh sweet jesus the baby's commin!" holding her cell phone above her head so the officer could hear her but she couldn't hear him. Meanwhile I told my son to prop up my daughter in law and help her push, I took off my coat and put it under her and stripped her pants, bloomers and all off in one pull. Okay, we are on the side of the road, doors wide open. a wild woman yelling into a cell phone, and another leaning over a woman in the backseat of a car on a freezing cold day wouldn't you think someone would stop to see what was wrong? Nope, nada, zero, no one. Cars whizzed by not even slowing down. back to the action, my son is starting to worry (he is not a worrier) he looks at me and says"Mom?"about 15 times. I told him it was going to be okay, then my daughter in law started pushing, Mary is giving me directions on delivery, all the while yelling sweet jesus every other word, we have an ambulance comming but is 15 miles away still, but our baby didn't care she was on her way. Well I was talking to myself, saying please please let everything go alright and let me not drop this baby. You see it was so cold, I was shaking and there was alot of blood.I seen the crown of the head and said push, she pushed, out came the baby's head, in the background Mary is screaming at the officer profanities which would make a sailor blush, because no ambulance was in sight. The baby came, she opened her eyes and seen me for the first time, with a terrified look on my face, heard her other granny swearing, Mommy screaming, daddy saying Mom and cars whizzing by. I held my granddaughter up side down and cleaned out her eyes with a pair of her mommy's new bloomers and used my finger to get the stuff out of her mouth. She started to cry that was the best sound in the world! I laid her on her Moms stomach and covered them both with Mary's coat and my body to hold warmth in. Finally the ambulance arrived and took Mommy and baby to hospital. We drove behind, me covered in blood, Mary in a state of hysteria about the baby being okay. We arrived at the hospital, I am covered in blood, people are staring at me. I went into the restroom to wash my hands and seen my clothes were covered with blood and other bodily fluids. They wouldn't let us see Mommy and baby for a while but told us that everything was great. So off we went to Wally World for clothes and a coat and of course flowers and gifts. I had Mary go buy the clothes and I changed in the Walmart bathroom, I can imagine what people thought when they seen me in there all bloody!
When we got back to the hospital the local newspaper was there to interview me and my daughter in law, Oh! I forgot to tell y'all, altogether she had only six contractions before having the baby! Soon after the paper local news stations started calling for interviews calling my granddaughter the Parkway baby. We were on 14 news stations and in six papers. The surprise came when Women's Weekly called and we were in a national magazine! My granddaughter is now seven and very healthy, every year on her birthday we put a pink bow on mile marker 14. Oh another thing she was born on her daddy's 21st birthday!
My 5 minutes of fame, well more like 60 minutes but whatever! I was blessed that day to stay calm and go through that wonderful experience of delivering my granddaughter safe and healthy.

This is an awesome story!
She may not appreciate it now, but when she gets older I hope she will be so proud that her Grandmo delivered her on the Mountain Parkway!
This seriously brought tears to my eyes because I know how dangerous that road is!
